Sergio is a Netflix docudrama for our times about a man who dedicates his life to spark the peaceful future of Iraq. A diplomat who sacrifices for a greater cause is a rarity anytime, even in our pandemic times. "Sergio" Vieira de Mello (Wagner Moura) came to Iraq as the UN high commissioner for human rights, who was successful in obtaining impossible diplomatic successes in Cambodia, East Timor, and Indonesia.
That Sergio was known as a cross between James Bond and Bobby Kennedy gives an idea of his charisma and dedication made for the big or little screen. Although he was flawed, and the film shows this, his weaknesses further solidify him as an exceptional and very human man.
More than half this docudrama is fully engrossing as it fleshes out players from the Bush administrator in Baghdad, Paul Bremer (Bradley Whitford) to the general of the revolutionary army, Xanana Gusmao (Pedro Hossi. Sergio's sometimes miraculous feats were as much due to his uncanny diplomatic skills as to his admirable humanity. When the story focuses on tense negotiations and his growing understanding of the Iraqi people, it crackles with excitement and insight.
However, when too much of the story centers on his romance with Carolina (Ana de Armas) who also works for the UN and for the people, the film loses itself in clichés and sentimentality worthy of the international thriller formula. That he is married with two children is never hidden because of too many family flashbacks as well as romantic beaches with Carolina; they crowd the picture to the detriment of the fine deconstruction of the Iraq mess. Even the requisite lovemaking scene is glossy and gratuitous, hardly important given the horrors enfolding outside the room. He's handsome, she's beautiful-they are attracted to each other-that's as much as we need to know. We need more about the bungling of the US and neutering of the UN.
If you're still quarantined, this Netflix film is a worthy companion as an intriguing true story about a political public servant who actually has high standards. Imagine that.

Wagner Moura is a great actor, but the film is not up to the real story. It is a shame, because Sergio was such an interesting and intense character and his story deserve to be told in another way, maybe less of a love story, and more of a humanitarian drama.
Storytelling is not good in the film, it simply does not have "the hook" more drama than suspense. Mistake. And, in other topic, the Argentinian character is not from Argentina. Mistake from the people leading the casting; it takes away credibility to the film.

The main cast Wagner Moura, I find him surprisingly sexy in this rather than in Narcos for sure. Supporting cast played character well and storyline are beautiful and thrilling. It's sure gonna leaves you emotional towards the end. I'm gonna gives a shout to Garrett Dillahunt also who keeps promoting this movie. Overall reasons I'm enjoying this movie and pls give this movie higher ratings.

/ 1130 votes / Runtime=80 Min / directors=Julien Leclercq / countries=France, Belgium. Efficient B series which goes straight to the point and does not bother with unnecessary digressions, the French director (Julien Leclercq) returns with this action movie to a rural western but via Netflix.
Let's admit. Earth and blood is not a "big film" but a decent B series which ensures a constant spectacle and which keeps the spectator alert throughout its 1 hour and 20 minutes.
The plot is very simple: a guy who has little to lose will defend what he has left, namely his daughter and his moral values, against the assault of gangsters who come armed to the teeth to recover a bag full of drugs.
Sami Bouajila has the potential of the job to shine in genre cinema and the talent to give substance to characters however archetypal. And facing him, Eriq Ebouaney brings all his charisma to an implacable and cruel bad guy.
The dialogues clearly play on the economy, the cutting is sharp and the director takes care of his staging without necessarily seeking the beautiful image. He willingly summons a certain imagery of the western which fits into his story.
Basically, the film finds its identity as a rural western with big touches of country survival and siege film.
As a matter of fact, there's an old tradition of French genre cinema that Eric Valette had unearthed with Le Serpent aux mille coupures. Here and there one would think of Total Western, Canicule or La Traque.
When the hunt takes place, the action becomes more and more present and the suspense settles permanently. There are sequences of chases in the forest of a rather ectic energy, sequences worthy of an undercover thriller in which the decor is largely involved, short shootings but still effective and well constructed, and even some scenes which leave a good place for savagery or even gore (in the sawmill.
Little room for nuance in this movie, with the good guys on the one side going to run up against the bad guys who attack them, but isn't that all that is asked with this kind of production: Efficiency and little small talk! Even if one can sometimes regret a somewhat dull photograph, seeking to transcribe the greyness of the Ardennes.
Please, why on Earth dub these things? Do Netflix assume that the audience is too thick to simultaneously engage with an action thriller and subtitles at the same time? That said, there is little by way of engagement to have with this modern-day French B-movie. A man ( Saïd" decides to sell his lumber mill, only to discover that one of his employees has been coerced to hide a substantial consignment of cocaine inside. When the gangsters turn up to collect their property, all hell breaks lose and he must defend his family and property from their ruthlessness. It's all a bit standard - though not totally devoid of action and tension - with some pretty ginormous plot holes and startling errors of judgement. Worth a watch, but a fairly weak example of the genre that you will probably forget quite quickly.
